Autumn Bucket List for Dorsten
The temperatures in Dorsten are slowly starting to fall, the days are getting shorter and the leaves are turning different colours. That can only mean one thing – autumn has arrived on the Lippe.
This is a great season for getting outdoors and enjoying nature. There are plenty of things to do in the north-west of Germany in autumn, indoors as well as outdoors. In this blog post we would like to show some of our favourite activities for the season, of course not only for the southern Münsterland region.
Hiking and Autumn Walks in the North-West of Germany
In autumn, one of our favourite things to do is hike or stroll in the woods. The leaves change colour. That makes autumn such a pretty season to be outdoors.
It is also a great option if you have children, as they love running around and exploring nature. On a fine autumn day, a walk is wonderful. In autumn, a stroll is far more pleasant than in summer.
Carving Pumpkins in Dorsten
Another entertaining activity for this time of year is pumpkin carving. It is a great day out for the whole family.
You can visit a local farm and pick your own pumpkins, or simply buy them in a shop. Once you have your pumpkins, you can bake them into cakes or carve them into lanterns.
Cooking Autumn Recipes
Food is one of the best things about autumn! So why not do some cooking at home in Dorsten?
In autumn, many people crave heartier, more filling dishes than in the warmer months. There are quite a few tasty cooking and baking recipes that can be made with seasonal produce. In the southern Münsterland region you can usually get all the ingredients easily.
Pumpkin bread, sweet potato bake, roasted Brussels sprouts, pumpkin risotto and chestnuts are among our favourites. Not only to warm yourself up in autumn with a stew or a soup, you can prepare them in many variations too.
Picking Mushrooms in the Area
If you are looking for an activity for the autumn, you can try mushroom picking. It is a great opportunity to get outdoors and explore nature. You can find edible mushrooms in the woods, in fields or simply by the wayside.
Before you start picking, find out which kinds of mushroom are not poisonous. If in doubt, only put in your basket those you are one hundred per cent sure about.
Varied Night Walks
The days are getting shorter – a typical herald of autumn. On a night walk you can experience the air and the stars. A night walk in the southern Münsterland region is an excellent way to relax and switch off after a hectic day.
It is important to bring a torch and dress warmly. Incidentally, a walk at night is even more fun as a torchlit walk.
Flying a Kite
Another entertaining autumn activity is flying a kite. It is great fun for the whole family, and of course works especially well on an autumn day with enough wind in Dorsten.
You can buy a kite in a shop, or make one yourself and give it your own designs. Then simply find a large open space or an empty field and let the wind do the work.
Visiting a Maize Maze
A visit to a maize maze is a great activity for a cloudless autumn day. It is a fine autumn activity for experiencing the forces of nature in a playful way.
Almost every region has one or more maize mazes – on the Lippe too. Just do some research so that you know the maze's opening hours, how big it is and whether there are extras such as farm stalls, face painting or a petting zoo.
Geocaching in the North-West of Germany
A great way to get outdoors and explore the area alone, with friends or with children is geocaching, a kind of GPS treasure hunt. You can find geocaches in the woods and fields. Just have a look, as there are sure to be geocaches near you too.
Just do some research before you set off, so that you know how it works and where it is particularly exciting.
A Cosy Bonfire in the Southern Münsterland Region
Making a warming bonfire is one of the best things about autumn. If you want to relax and switch off after a miserable day, it is a great option.
Of course, the fire can also be used to roast something and eat it. Fish, sausage wrapped in foil or chestnuts take on a very distinctive aroma this way. Marshmallows make an excellent dessert. Stay careful and remember not to leave your fire unattended.
Eating Roasted Chestnuts
Eating roasted chestnuts is an excellent way to forget the autumn weather. You can buy them ready-roasted or roast them yourself over an open fire.
You will find many chestnut stalls and huts in Dorsten in the city, at weekly markets and, later in the year, at the Christmas markets too. But take care if you eat too many – chestnuts can cause stomach ache.
A Spa Visit in Dorsten
Visiting a spa is a great opportunity to relax and rejuvenate at the same time. Body wraps, massages and facials – spas offer a wide range of treatments.
Facials with pumpkin spice or cranberry peels are autumn treatments that various spas have even specialised in. Warming baths and sauna sessions also suit the autumn weather well, of course, as they strengthen your immune system.
Games Afternoons with Friends
Games are really well suited to passing the time in dreary autumn weather. Video games, board games and card games are all fun ways to beat boredom.
With friends and family it is understandably even more fun. It also serves a social purpose.
Baking Cakes at Home in Dorsten
When it is stormy or even snowing outside, baking is a great way to spend the afternoon.
There are many autumn recipes for cakes, tarts and biscuits that you can bake at home.
You can also decorate your creations with autumn motifs such as pumpkins or leaves.
Conclusion
As you can see, there are plenty of ways to pass the time in and around Dorsten in autumn. Of course there are many more to look up that can bring variety to your everyday life.
We hope you have a great time and make the most of the season!
