Sommerhitze in Landshut

Not only in Landshut an der Isar is the height of summer approaching. Many people struggle with the heat, but just as many look forward to summer. In Landshut in Bavaria, with its nearly 75 thousand residents, there are simple measures you can take to make the season more bearable.

You're probably already familiar with many of these, while others might be new and helpful. Knowing the answers to coping with the summer heat in Landshut is good, but useless if you don't put them into practice.

12 tips for the hot summer:

1. Drink plenty of fluids

Drinking plenty is really a given: in the summer heat, you should drink lots of water, especially when outdoors. This is essential because when you sweat, you lose not only water but also minerals from your body.

The effects of this can be cramps or heat exhaustion. In summer, you should mainly drink water, but unsweetened fruit juices and herbal teas are helpful too. Fizzy drinks and other sugary beverages can intensify the feeling of dehydration, which is why they're not recommended in summer.

2. Avoid the midday sun

The midday sun is between 12pm and 3pm. The sun is at its strongest during this time. Stay in the shade if possible, or wear a hat.

Bear this in mind when planning your day - it's better to go for walks in the evening or morning rather than at midday. It's best to postpone physically demanding activities until the temperatures have cooled down a bit.

3. Wear suitable clothing

Your clothing should cover as much of your body as possible and should be light-coloured, lightweight and loose-fitting. This protects you from dangerous sun rays while keeping you cool at the same time.

Natural fabrics such as silk, cotton or linen are best. Natural fabrics absorb sweat well and are breathable.

Avoid synthetic materials such as polyester, as these don't absorb sweat, which makes you feel even hotter. The more changes of clothes, the better - because of the sweat. Prepare early, as summer arrives faster than expected.

4. Air out your house/flat

Open the windows and doors, but only when it's cooler outside than inside. You shouldn't let any little critters in.

You can also cool your rooms by hanging damp towels in front of the windows or using an electric fan. It can get very hot quickly, especially in attic flats or those facing south.

5. Switch off electronic devices

TVs, PCs and other electrical devices continuously generate heat even in standby mode. So you should switch off electronic devices completely when they're not being used.

You should postpone charging electronic devices until night-time.

6. Dry your washing outdoors ...

... in a garden or on a large balcony. Wet washing leads to increased humidity in the home. This is perceived by the body as warmer than dry air. In hot weather, washing dries faster outside anyway.

7. Don't eat too much

A big meal will make you sweat even more and make you tired. It's smarter to eat several small meals spread throughout the day. Also avoid fatty dishes, as these take longer to digest and could make you feel uncomfortable. The exception proves the rule that lighter dishes taste better to us in summer.

8. Always think about sun protection

Increased skin cancer risk and premature skin ageing are caused by UV radiation. Don't forget - your skin never forgets!

So always apply sunscreen with a high SPF before going outdoors, even on cloudy days. It's best to reapply sunscreen every two hours, especially if you're at the swimming pool.

9. Air-conditioned rooms

It's helpful to take a break in a cooler room now and then to cool down on a really hot day. This could be your own home if it has a cellar or air conditioning, or equally a supermarket or the library.

10. Watch out - alcohol

Alcohol has a dehydrating effect and shouldn't be drunk for this reason. If you do drink alcohol, remember to order a glass of water with every alcoholic drink.

The effects of alcoholic drinks can also make you careless: everyone has lost track of time at some point because of it.

11. Think of your fellow Landshut residents

You mustn't only think of yourself, as the people around you matter too.

Warm weather is particularly dangerous for older people, those with chronic illnesses or small children. Watch out for nausea, vomiting, dizziness or headaches in those around you, as these are signs of heat exhaustion.

Help wherever possible as soon as you notice these symptoms in someone!

12. In cars

Never leave your children or pets alone in parked cars: the temperature can rise quickly even in cars parked in the shade!

Year after year, this issue is still dramatically downplayed and underestimated, and sometimes simply forgotten. In a closed vehicle, the temperature can reach dangerous levels within just a few minutes, posing a health risk to both animals and humans.

This information will help you enjoy summer while getting through it well. Here are a few shorter tips:

  • It's a smart idea to buy a few portable fans or misting sprays, as you can use these again every year.

  • Make sure your home is well ventilated and check that all unnecessary heat sources are removed.

  • When it's warm, it helps to prepare meals in advance a bit, so you save yourself the extra heat from the cooker.

  • If you keep the blinds or curtains closed, the heat stays outside.

  • A cold bath or cold shower before bed helps you sleep better.

  • Try not to do sport in warm weather - no matter how hard it is - except for swimming.

With these tips, you should get through summer well in Landshut, especially at the Stadtbad Landshut.

Going out for ice cream is an excellent idea, especially if you can sit outside in the shade.

Stay cool and have fun!
