Tipping in Germany: how most people do it
In Germany, a tip of 5 to 10 percent is customary in restaurants — significantly less than in the USA, for example, because service staff here receive a regular wage. Common practice is rounding up to a round amount: €46.50 becomes €50, announced with a friendly "keep the change".
Split the bill without mental arithmetic
The calculator divides the total including tip evenly by the number of people — handy for group visits, business dinners or regulars' nights. Looking for your next restaurant? On Die Besten der Stadt you will find the top restaurants in over 500 German cities.
Frequently asked questions
How much do you tip in Germany?
5 to 10 percent of the bill is customary in restaurants, more for very good service. Unlike in the USA, tipping in Germany is voluntary — staff receive a regular wage.
Do you tip when paying by card?
Yes, simply state the desired total before paying ("Make it 54 euros"). Many card terminals now also ask for a tip directly. Cash tips, however, often reach the staff more directly.
Do I have to tip if the service was bad?
No. A tip is a voluntary recognition of good service. With poor service it is perfectly fine to tip less or not at all.
Is the Tip Calculator free?
Yes, the calculator is free and can be used without registration — including bill splitting for groups.
