What to do about the summer heat in Lippstadt?
The height of summer isn't just coming to Lippstadt an der Lippe. Many people struggle with the summer, but just as many look forward to it. Whatever your view of this season, there are a few simple things you can do to protect yourself and make life a little easier - not only in Lippstadt in North Rhine-Westphalia, with its nearly 70,000 residents.
Some measures are perhaps well-known, while others are helpful and new. Knowing the solutions to the high-summer temperatures in Lippstadt is all well and good, but there's no point if you don't put them into practice.
Summertime - Our 12 Tips
1. Drink Plenty of Fluids
Drinking plenty of fluids is really just common sense: when you're out in the sun, it's very important to drink a lot, mainly water, during the summer heat. This matters because when you sweat, you lose not just water but also minerals from your body.
This can lead to heatstroke, sunstroke, heat exhaustion or cramps. In summer, you should mainly drink water, though unsweetened fruit juices and herbal teas are just as helpful. Avoid sugary drinks such as fizzy drinks, as these can actually worsen the feeling of dehydration.
2. Avoid the Midday Sun
Between 12pm and 3pm, you should definitely avoid the sun, as it's at its strongest during this time. Stay in the shade if possible, or wear a hat.
It's very important to plan your day well, so go for walks in the morning or evening instead of at midday when it's so warm. You can certainly move strenuous physical activities to a cooler time of day.
3. Wear Suitable Clothing
Wear loose, light-coloured, lightweight clothing that covers as much of your body as possible. This way, you're protected from harmful sun rays while staying cool.
Natural fabrics such as linen, cotton or silk are best for summer. These fabrics are breathable and absorb sweat well.
Avoid synthetic fibres such as polyester, as these materials don't absorb sweat, which makes you feel even hotter. You should change your clothes more often because of sweating. You should prepare in good time, as the heat can catch you out faster than you'd think.
4. Always Air Out Your Home
When it's cooler outside, open the windows and doors. Just be careful not to let any small critters in.
You can cool down rooms by hanging wet towels in front of the windows or using a fan. It gets particularly hot in loft flats or flats facing south.
5. Switch Off Electrical Devices
Even in standby mode, televisions, computers and other electrical devices generate constant heat. Always unplug electronic devices completely from the mains when they're not in use.
You should also postpone charging devices until night-time.
6. Dry Your Washing Outdoors ...
... in a garden or on a large balcony. Damp washing indoors increases humidity, which the body perceives as warmer than dry air. Washing also dries faster outdoors in high temperatures anyway.
7. Don't Eat Too Much
A large meal makes you sweat even more and leaves you feeling tired. It's better to eat several small meals throughout the day. Since long digestive processes can leave you feeling uncomfortable, you should avoid fatty dishes. As the exception proves the rule, lighter meals simply taste better to us in summer.
8. Don't Forget Sun Protection
Your skin is damaged by UV rays, which leads to premature skin ageing and increases the risk of skin cancer. Don't forget - your skin never does!
Don't forget sun cream with a high SPF as soon as you step outside, no matter how cloudy it is. Especially at the swimming pool, you should reapply sun cream at least every two hours.
9. Cool Breaks in Lippstadt
It's a smart idea to take a break in a cooler room now and then to cool down on a really hot day. This could be the library, the supermarket, or even your own home, if you have air conditioning or a cellar.
10. Alcoholic Drinks
Alcoholic drinks should be avoided, as alcohol has a dehydrating effect. You should order at least one glass of water for every alcoholic drink.
You should also bear in mind that the effects of alcohol generally make you less careful: everyone has lost track of time while drinking at some point.
11. Fellow Lippstadt Residents
Think of others, not just yourself.
Hot weather can be genuinely dangerous for small children, older people or those with chronic illnesses: keep an eye out for dizziness, headaches, nausea or vomiting in those around you, as these are signs of heat exhaustion.
As soon as these signs appear, help as much as you can!
12. In Cars
Never leave your children or pets in parked cars: the temperature inside a parked car can rise rapidly!
Year after year, this issue is still dramatically played down and underestimated, and sometimes simply forgotten. On hot days, the temperature inside a closed vehicle can reach dangerous levels within minutes - for both people and animals!
