VAT in hospitality: 7% or 19%?

For restaurateurs the distinction is crucial: food consumed on site is subject to the standard rate of 19%. Food to take away — delivery, collection, to-go — is taxed at the reduced rate of 7%. Drinks are almost always taxed at 19% regardless of location. (As of 2026, not tax advice.)

The formulas

Net → Gross: Gross = Net × 1.19 (or × 1.07). Gross → Net: Net = Gross ÷ 1.19 (or ÷ 1.07). The VAT included is the difference between gross and net. For pricing your menu, our Menu Calculator.

Frequently asked questions

When does 7% and when does 19% VAT apply in hospitality?

Food consumed on site is taxed at 19%, food to take away (delivery, collection, to-go) at 7%. Drinks are almost always subject to 19% — whether on site or to take away. Exceptions such as milk are taxed at 7%. (As of 2026)

How do I calculate the VAT out of a gross amount?

Gross divided by 1.19 (at 19%) or 1.07 (at 7%) gives the net amount. The difference is the VAT included. The calculator does this in both directions.

What is the difference between Mehrwertsteuer and Umsatzsteuer?

Colloquially both terms are used interchangeably. The law speaks of Umsatzsteuer (UStG); "Mehrwertsteuer" describes the same principle from the end consumer's perspective.

Is the VAT Calculator free?

Yes, the calculator is free and can be used without registration.
