These events are recommended for sports lovers

For horse lovers and fans of professional horse racing, Hamburg with its Derbypark in Klein Flottbek is once again a venue for tournaments this spring. From 13 to 17 May, the German Jumping and Dressage Derby takes place in Hamburg. The Derby was founded in 1920 by Eduard Pulvermann and has since become a firm spring tradition, generating the organisers an annual profit of one million euros. Among professional riders, it’s considered the toughest show-jumping derby course. This year, the Derby will be held for the first time without a horse change.

The course length of 1,230 metres has remained unchanged since it was founded and includes natural obstacles. Among these is the two-metre-high Pulvermanngraben, famous for the fact that Pulvermann himself was never able to clear it. A 3.5-metre-high wall with an 80° incline also presents a challenge. These obstacles are genuine hurdles for the participants – riders and horses – who travel from all over the world. Around 90,000 visitors are expected this year.

The next exciting block of events in the spring calendar is also all about sport and promises plenty of thrilling moments. Sports fans, especially handball fans, were thrilled by the Women’s World Championship on 14 and 15 March in Stuttgart. In the Final Four for the DHB Cup, Schwarzgelb triumphed 30:25 against Bensheim-Auerbach in Stuttgart. Analysts say it was a real breakthrough: it was a historic success for BVB, “with the DHB Cup win, Borussia Dortmund has made a historic statement”. 

Furthermore, the men’s handball championship takes place in Köln on 18 and 19 April. For fans, this event marks the premium fixture of German club handball at the LANXESS arena, where the men compete for the coveted cup. The weekend reaches its climax on Sunday: after the third-place match at 12:45pm, the big final at 3:45pm decides which team is crowned the new DHB Cup champion.
